What is autism?
Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the ability to communicate and interact with the world around them. It manifests itself in early childhood, before the age of 3, and is diagnosed by the symptoms of the autism spectrum that appear during this period. Older children, teenagers, and adults do not develop autism.
Autism can range from mild to severe. It occurs about four to five times more often in boys than in girls. Autism is characterized by difficulty perceiving the world around it, often accompanied by delayed intellectual development.
The key to treating autism is early recognition of the signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorders in infants and young children.
